This was our first year growing tomatoes. Someone with more experience might have harvested them before this last week of rain and let them finish ripening on the counter. That's just a guess, because during that time period, the tomatoes changed from perfect specimens to the scarred beauties you see above. When you grow them yourself you're not going to just throw them away and that's a good thing because these tomatoes are pretty darned flavorful. They have a rich fruity aroma. They are juicy and tender and they taste like summer. Looking at them I suddenly realized why so many Italian recipes call for removing the tomato skins. It's an easy way to work around an ugly tomato. A little editing can make anything beautiful and thus more delicious.
